The Catholic Church in Sudan

The Catholic Church in Sudan is governed by the Sudan Council of Catholic Bishops. There are eleven dioceses, including the Diocese of Rumbek.

The history of the Church in Sudan is one of bloodshed, suffering, and martyrdom. In the years since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, it has served as an advocate for peace and reconciliation, as well as on the forefront of the rebuilding and education efforts in Sudan.

Capacity building is ongoing in every diocese, and the Sudan Council of Catholic Bishops actively lobbies the government on behalf of the Sudanese people for better facilities, better infrastructure, and most importantly, security.

Additionally, the Catholic Church has, and continues to do so, spearheaded cooperative efforts among Christians in Sudan through the New Sudan Council of Churches, which was instrumental in brokering peace agreements such as the 1999 Wunlit Accord.
